* * *

My alarm sounded, and I slapped at it until I turned it off. I swung my feet over the side of my bed. My arm ached, my fingers were swollen, and my fingertips throbbed but were still warm and pink. Too early to call the doctor’s office. I raised my arm so my fingers were higher than my heart. The ache in my arm eased, but my shoulder burned. I slogged through my early morning routine, and Colonel and I left for the shop.

When we walked in, Tiffany stared. “You look awful, Miss Lady. What happened?”

“I think I reinjured my arm. I’ll call the doc’s office at seven. Woody selected a Friday winner.” I eased onto a stool at the counter.

Tiffany turned on the fryer and brought me a cup of coffee. “What did he choose?”

“Ready?” I smiled. “National Crop Duster Day. He suggested dusting the donuts with powdered sugar.”

“Wow. That’s brilliant. I’ll check to see if I need to pick up extra powdered sugar for tomorrow. We have only the book club on the calendar this morning. Pink sprinkles and maple.” She narrowed her eyes. “Unless you have a feeling we need to do more than our usual Thursday.”

“No feeling.” I sipped my coffee. “Except my arm hurts. Would you put the flyer in the holder on the display case? We can advertise our Friday special on Thursdays. Get a little interest going.”

The door creaked open. “Good morning,” the sheriff said. “You replaced the jingle with a creak. Sounds spooky to me. He opened and closed the door.”

“Officially annoying.” I frowned.

“Me or the door? Don’t answer.” The sheriff sat next to me at the counter and peered at my face. “What’s wrong with you? You look awful.”

“Funny, Tiffany said the same thing.”

Tiffany poured coffee, handed the sheriff his donuts, and crossed her arms. “Tell.”

“You two aren’t going to give up, are you? I fell asleep on the sofa, rolled off, and landed on my arm. And you sounded just like Gee for a second there, Tiff.”

“Well done, Tiffany Gee.” The sheriff held up his hand, and Tiffany smacked a high-five.

“And we’re calling the doctor at seven,” Tiffany added.

The sheriff stuffed the rest of his pink sprinkled donut into his mouth, wrapped my fingers in his hand, and pinched a fingernail. “Your fingers are still warm, and your circulation’s fine. We don’t have to jump into the patrol car with lights and sirens and dash to the emergency room.”

“That’s good, but do you have a hairbrush in your purse, Miss Lady? Your hair’s a fright.” She refilled our cups.

“You two are hovering. I might have a hairbrush or a comb in the storeroom file cabinet.”

The sheriff glanced at the display case. “Tomorrow’s National Crop Duster Day? What will the donuts be?”

“A surprise.” I chuckled, and he glared.

Tiffany returned with a hairbrush and waved at the reading area. I sat in my reading chair, and she brushed out the tangles with deft strokes. “There you go. Better.”

“Thanks, Tiffany.”

The sheriff strode to the door.
